BLK: An Origin Story – a Veracious Telling of Canadian History

From creators of Jamaican heritage, Jennifer Holness and Sudz Sutherland, BLK: An Origin Story is a four-part documentary series – that brings untold history to audiences across Canada. Watch our conversation with them about the importance of putting creative energy into telling these long suppressed stories.

Each one-hour episode of BLK: An Origin Story features a cast of experts – authors, academics, musicians, historians, community leaders, activists and elders – who weave together compelling stories of the Black men and women who are the unsung heroes of Canada’s foundation.

Heroes like the maroons deported from Jamaica whose journey and legacy in Canada proved their powerful spirit cannot be subdued. These warriors maintained their position as equal among men and never stopped fighting for their liberation.

Executive producer Jennifer Holness said “It was important for us to deliver the series as a comprehensive, multi-layered, multi-disciplinary and essential Canadian journey. We are grateful to the stalwarts, knowledge keepers, and storytellers from Black Canadian communities … who shared the immense generational experiences and events documented in each episode … a defining part of Canada's overall identity”.
